How You Change Lives in Our Community

Monday, 07 February 2011 10:27 Published in Our Thai Village Life

How Your Investment Helps Our Village Community

Our Thai village has an average household income of less than $90 per month. There is a severe problem with rural debt and lifestyles are at times primitive.

However, our village folks are proud, work hard and determined to provide a better future for their children.

At Thai Silk Magic we are passionate about helping in any way we can to improve village lifestyles and create better educational opportunities for the children.

When you purchase your Thai silk from us ALL THE PROFITS are shared with our village. Here are some actual examples of the things we do to help our village:

teacherstudents2Contribute to the rebuilding of our village school - the story here is that the Government knocked down the old school as it was unsafe and leaked badly when it rained. Then the Government changed their mind and told us that their was no funds left to rebuild.

Students were sent out to other villages and some were taught under the shade of trees in the school yard - not the best educational facilities, especially when the monsoon rains arrived.

So we allocated a major proportion of our early sales revenues to this school rebuilding program that we are proud to say was completed in double-quick time.

Improve fresh rainwater collection systems

Provide uniforms and much needed school supplies to childrenhappy students of the most needy families. We faced a situation in 2009/2010 when we saw tears streaming down the faces of parents as they had to take their children out of school simply because they could not afford the minimal costs involved.

Created our village school's first library

Repaired leaking roofs and power supplies of the homes of our poorest families - many of whom never complained about being completely soaked when it rained and their electrical connections were frail and rarely worked to drive cooling fans and the basic lighting.

Install new cooking, cleaning and washing facilities - we have seen some big changes from the traditional cooking fire to the use of gas and electricity and some of the homes now have washing machines.

strong house9Enable families to build safer and more robust homes that will protect them in the monsoon season. We have a long way to go here and just recently when we visited a neighbour my foot went straight through the upstairs floor boards.

Only the most basic building techniques have been used and some of the homes look like animal barns with no windows or glass anywhere.

Set up an educational support fund to assist the further education opportunities of the more needy families. A recent great example was the funding of one of our students to study law at a university about 100 kms away - this was a very proud moment for all of us.

Provide food and basic household supplies to elderly folks that have no land or immediate family support. People without land (often the result of past rural debt problems resulting in the land being reclaimed) have no rice crop which is the basic food staple.

This is a major challenge for us as there is a need to change the way people go about their farm working life. Currently people with land have adequate supplis of rice but there is really no profit to be made from this farming as most of their crop sales go to repay existing loans.

Help with the construction of  safer play areas for children and students-in-showsponsored children's shows. These shows are great fun and there is more time spent on make-up than the actual performance. But everyone in the village attends and we have shared some very funny experiences. By covering the costs Thai Silk Magic helps in a small way for kids to "live out their stage dreams".

Encouraged, supported and initially stocked a general store in our village - we even have ice cream!

Assisted in the purchase of improved rice farm equipment, especially with the purchase of small multi-purpose tractors. The days of the buffalo doing all the grunt work in ploughing are over but these animals are still kept as revered members of the family.

Educated and helped people to set up their first bank accounts with a focus on saving rather than spending. Amnuai has helped every single weaver to do this as we wanted to make sure their income from their silk weaving was not just spent on things like new motor bikes or better TV sets etc.

Our weavers enjoy our fair-pay principles plus we also pay a bonus. The results so far are that these families are now earning more than double what they did prior to Thai Silk Magic and this will increase as we get more customers to invest in our Thai silk.

Every day we continue to build confidence in the concept that "Thai Silk Magic will help you to help yourself and your family"

A Recent Vistor's Perspective:

A recent visitor to Thai Silk Magic, Elisabeth Prantl, a highly regarded Austrian textile consultant, says it all:

"I discovered Thai Silk Magic and their little village of Ban Dong Yang on my recent country-wide tour of Thailand's textile suppliers. Not only is their handmade silk of the highest quality but I saw for myself just what a positive impact this community project is having on their village.

People were so proud to show me their new kitchen area or their children's new home study area and I was even invited to drive a new tractor - all the result of this community project.

Thai Silk Magic is proud of its early success but there are many challenges ahead in their mission to improve lifestyles. I have not seen this completely unselfish sharing of benefits anywhere else before and I am determined to return to this village to help them in any way I can to achieve their wonderful objectives"

  • The patterns we use for our Thai silk are original and unique
  • We always use natural dyes to provide our colourThai Silk Magic uses only Natural Dies range. We guarantee our fabrics are eco-friendly and perfectly safe for everyone
  • The natural dyes come from our local vegetables, trees, plants, wild flowers and soil (actually mud) and are very carefully mixed with lemon grass, eucalyptus, tamarind fruits and ants to create a colour-fast yarn that will be used to produce beautiful organic silk fabrics
  • The silk weaving process is an extremely time consuming handloom process where a single weaver may only produce 2 meters of Thai silk fabric in a day

What is Organic Silk

What is Organic Silk?

colourfulsilkthreadsresized(1)-20101025005641Organic silk is created without the use of any chemicals or treatments using insecticides, pesticides or synthetic additives (often used by some silk suppliers to provide additional softness to their silk fabrics).

Organic silk is most often produced in small villages by indigenous people and is the choice for the purest silk.

It is a highly sustainable crop with cocoons being produced when the silkworms are about 35 days old. Organic Silk is grown in 22 countries all over the world.

Thai Silk Magic is located in our village of Ban Dong Yang which is right in the center of the Thailand silkworm industry.

Versatility of Organic Silk

Organic silk has the versatility to be blended with just about any other fiber. Organic silk has even been successfully and scientifically used in many skin care products to help reducing wrinkles and in hair products to help hair looking glossy.

Untreated, organic silk is not only the highest quality silk you’ll ever wear, it’s also believed to have healing, anti-inflammatory benefits, making it ideal for sensitive skin. This is because silk is naturally hypoallergenic, and is resistant to dust mites and mold. Silk also is a breathable and thermal fiber that helps balance body temperature.

Impacts of Organic Silk Farming

Organic silk farming has far reaching effects by also promoting the sustainability of mulberry trees, which are the silkworms food source Organic Silk Organic silk is incredibly warm and breathable.

We do realize that nature also has chemicals - some very dangerous like arsenic. However, organic silk is a natural product that contains no harmful trace chemicals and will therefore not deteriorate over time. Thai Silk Magic uses no cleaning or dyeing or finishing chemicals and we are proud of our beautifully natural creations.

Even the mordants we use to ensure color-fastness at Thai Silk Magic are created from a secret combination of special lemon grasses, eucalyptus leaves, ants, friuts and the bark from the tamarind tree. And it works brilliantly!

Buying organic products like silk made with organic fibers is a great way to contribute to the eco-friendly consciousness that has risen recently. While being a comparatively healthy and organic natural fiber, silk, like other fibers containing protein chains such as wools and even latex, is an allergen for some people.

Government Regulations - or Lack of It

One of the problems is, however, that there are very few, if any, governmental bodies that regulate whether or not a piece of silk is labeled "certified organic". Silk is a natural fiber but sometimes there are things are done to the fiber that, in some consumer's eyes, make the silk considered non-organic.

Critical Impact of Dyes

The main issue that causes concern in determining if silk is organic is the dyeing processes. Some producers use environmentally friendly non-natural dyes that are claimed to be "organic."

Real organic silk is a material that most closely resembles human skin and the silk organic fabrics are hand woven and dyed by hand using natural dyes. In addition, with organic silk, the mulberry trees they feed on are grown organically, without pesticides or fertilizers. purple bunch of flowers photo1 resized-20101025015123

The use of 100% natural dyes made from tree bark, vegetables, wild grasses and flowers provide the best option for purely organic silk.

Healthy organic silk can be more expensive than synthetic fibers and certain people are known to have allergies to either domestic silk, wild silk or both.

Eco-fabrics like organic silk do not contain any added chemicals that kill bacteria, and fight odours. In addition, as all our processes including extracting, spinning and weaving are ALL DONE BY HAND.

We use no machinery and therefore this process has little or no impact on our environment - a truly eco-friendly production process!

There is no question that organic silk production is the more environmentally friendly and a sustainable practice of silk cultivation.

Thai silk fabric has always signified luxury and elegance and is today, still valued highly, dubbing it the "Queen of Fiber."

Making Thai Silk

How is Thai Silk Made?

Silkwormseatingresized-20101025014617Want to know how Thai silk is made? Check this out as the process is very surprising. Great information for everyone interested in the silk industry and very helpful for kids school project material.

As you probably know from your schooldays, the raw silk material is a natural product of the silkworm, which is a type of moth that feeds on the foliage of the mulberry tree.

The Complex Thai Silk Making Process

  • The silkworms, which are really caterpillars, are grown primarily in the country's northeast region and our silk thread is a natural light gold color. This process is called "sericulture."
  • The most valuable silk yarn is obtained from a silkworm that comes from the Bombyx mori moth.
  • This moth can neither see or fly but it has a singular, very important job and that is to lay the eggs for the next generation of silkworms.
  • The silk cocoons consists of one thread that can be as long as 500 or 600 yardssilkcocoon2resized-20101025014402 and these threads are boiled to remove the glue-like material left over from the cocoons.
  • Actually many of the ladies in our Thai Silk Magic weaver’s group love to eat the glue-like or pupa material removed from the silk thread (although I have not tried it myself, my grandmother told me that it is very nutritious and takes a little like corn).
  • Each thread is too thin to use alone so many threads are combined to make a thicker, more workable fiber.
  • Our Thai silk is yarn dyed and therefore it has to be processed by hand by the lady weavers.
  • The raw silk yarn is then soaked in grandma’s secret tree bark, wild flowers, mountain grasses and vegetable natural dyes before being washed again, stretched and then put through a final dying process.
  • After the final dyeing and drying, the threads are wound onto wooden spindles and this is also a very time consuming process. A lovely group of our grandmothers specialise in this task and it will often take 2 or 3 days to reel about 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs) of silk.

However, once this part of the Thai silk making process is completed, we are ready to weave and create our unique Thai silk fabrics.

Traditional Hand Weaving

Thaisilkhandloom-20101025005641Our village traditional weaving is a slow and long “labor of love” process, The ladies operating their hand looms can only produce about two yards of Thai silk fabric in a single day, if they are very experienced and skilled in their craft.

Therefore, the whole Thai silk making process can take a long time to produce this environmentally friendly and unique fabric.

Our processes are very time consuming but the final hand woven Thai silk fabric is a unique, high quality work of art by our lady weavers. Thai silk fabrics created by machines can obviously be completed a lot more quickly but it will not have the quality and uniqueness produced by our traditional, handmade silk processes.

Drapes and Curtains!

Silk Drapery Fabric

To keep things simple lets define drapes as longer curtains. Generally drapes are used to beautify windows or even to make a major statement in a room. If you are looking for a smart, stylish curtain or drape then you have to be quite selective about the fabric you buy and do some research. This will help you decide on the style of silk drapery fabric you prefer that will perfectly match your room. In your research make sure you look at both the "function" and "form" of your fabric. Function is simply how you intend to use the silk fabric whilst Form is what it will preferably look like.

How To Choose Silk Drapery Fabrics

Silk Drapery FabricThere are so many silk fabric styles, patterns, textures, weights and color ranges to choose from so once you have decided on "function" and "form" for your silk drapery fabric, make sure you are fully aware of some other important characteristics of your silk drapery fabric including how easy it is to clean; how resistant it is to dust, dirt and bugs and finally how durable it is.

Silk drapery fabric can provide an absolutely stunning backdrop to any room. The inherent soft characteristics of Silk drapery will create intimacy as well as regulating the amount of sunlight that streams into your room. Another option to consider for your silk drapery fabric is "partnered" silk that has patterns that bring the silk to life and create a definite "discussion piece" backdrop in any room.

Silk drapery fabric can be striped 2 or 3 color material that gives a unique effect showing different colors shimmers in the changing daylight. However, if you choose textured silk, it is thicker, heavier and gives a more robust look to any room.

100% Naturally Dyed Thai Silks

Thai Silk Magic specializes in creating unique, handmade and eco-friendly Thai silk fabric using only 100% natural dyes - these 3-ply and 4-ply fabrics are ideal for drapes, especially if you are looking for that natural, organic or "country" touch!

Measurement
Silk Drapery Fabric

It is very important that you measure your windows carefully before you order any silk drapery fabric. For drapes, always measure from top to bottom and don't forget that your silk drapery fabric will be hanging from a curtain rod above the window frame and will usually fall to a point about 2 or 3 inches from your floor. When you are doing the drapes side measurements use a length about 3 or 4 inches wider than the window frame and then double your side-to-side measurement to enable a more luxurious effect.

Cleaning Your Drapes

Care must be taken with your silk drapery fabric, as although it is versatile and durable, incorrect washing will ruin its luster and/or permanently wrinkle your fabric. Make sure you use ONLY mild detergents and NEVER use a washing machine or leave out in the direct sunlight. If you are at all unsure, have your drapes dry cleaned. For your help please use this link for more details on "How to Take Care of Your Thai Silk."

silk drapery fabricYour Drape/Curtain Maker

Please make sure you give specific details to your drape maker re your preferred drapes' style, if you want your drapes to be closely fitted to your windows or a more flowing effect and whether you want your drapes to be pleated or not.

Don't forget to consider sheers in your discussions with your drape maker as these usually hand beneath the drapes and help control both sunlight and glare.

There is nothing that can renew or completely refresh a room like silk drapery fabric so go ahead and enjoy some luxury - it's more affordable than you realize.

Fabric For Curtains

Fabric for Curtains

Curtains are an important part of your home décor and selecting the right fabric for curtains can give your room or home a unique look. So if you are looking to refresh or modify your window treatments then there are many considerations you will have to make a decision on.

Some Considerations

Fabric for curtainsThink about the style of your home, the actual space or size of the room where you want to change your window dressings and the actual function of the curtains – do you want to make a statement with your new curtains that will be a real “discussion piece” with any visitors or merely have as a beautiful backdrop to your room?

In addition, think about the aspect of your home and the amount of sunlight entering your room at certain times of the day – like the possibility of late afternoon hot sun periods for people living in more tropical areas. Opacity is also important as this is simply how opaque the fabric for curtains really is and you can easily check this out by holding the fabric against the sunlight entering the window you are redressing. You can always add to the thickness of any fabric for curtains by adding lining – this will reduce opacity and also add to the durability of your curtain fabric.

The size of your room will determine the type of fabric for curtains as, for example, if your room is rather small and has small windows then placing heavy curtains there will simply darken an already small room and not add any spaciousness. In this instance it would be better to go for lightweight and delicate fabrics whereas if your room was quite large and spacious, then you could use a wider range of fabric for your curtains that would be more determined by the function you require.

Wide Variety of Fabrics

When looking for your fabric for curtains, there is indeed a wide variety of fabrics to choose from including from silk and cotton to lace and nets. Your final decision will be determined by taking into account all the considerations mentioned earlier and your personal preferences re style and function for your fabric for curtains

Why Custom Made Curtains?

Purchasing ready-made curtains may be cheaper but you are limited by the colors, designs and patterns Fabrics for Curtainsavailable. You will not have the opportunity to mix and match different fabrics for curtains and you may have to make do with actual sizes like length and width of curtains that may not perfectly fit your window area.

With custom made curtains, you can select from a whole range of fabric for curtains, include a wider range of colors, patterns and designs – bring out your creativity! Custom made curtains will be a perfect fit for your windows where you can determine exactly whether you want pleats, a more intricate or classical flowing styles.

More Convenience and Less Stress!

Silk Fabric – What Really Is It?

Who Discovered Silk Fabric?

raw silkSilk fabric was discovered around 3000 BC in China and it’s believed that the empress Xi Ling-Shi was the first to develop the silks into fabrics. For many centuries that followed silk fabric was a closely guarded secret of all Chinese Emperors. This created a rare and extremely exclusive product that was as precious as gold and exotic spices when it finally appeared in early international trade.

Even today, silk fabric is still a highly regarded and valuable product. Perhaps some of the reasons for this high regard come from the fact that it is a natural fabric with its own unique softness and luster.

Incredible Characteristics of Silk Fabric

Silk fabric is a really protein very similar to human hair and it Thai silkcontains some incredible characteristics that set it apart from all other fabrics. It is extremely durable, has a tensile strength greater than steel, can be dyed in a huge array of colours and has unbelievable moisture absorption capacity that gives it a soft feel on your skin as well as being warm in winters and cool to wear in the hotter months.

The Many Uses of Silk Fabrics

Silk fabric can be used for a wide variety of uses such as clothes, curtains, neckties, scarves and is even highly regarded as a fabric for home furnishings. Today silk fabric is highly valued by the world’s fashion industry and has established a benchmark of luxury and wealth.

Creating Silk Fabric

The various processes involved in silk fabric manufacturing is extremely time consuming and often very labour intensive. A huge amount of work is required to ensure the silk is of the highest possible quality to ensure, that in this very competitive international marketplace, the fibers and silk fabric products meet the customers’ expectations.

making silk fabricFor example, it takes at least 1 week of a very competent hand weaver to produce enough silk fabric for a simple dress. This is one of the reasons why silk fabric products like dresses, neckties, drapes, scarves and even silk flowers are often so expensive.

However, the actual cost of silk fabric will vary considerably depending on the type you choose and there are some very high quality yet affordable silk fabrics available today.

4 Key Types of Silk Fabric

Silk fabric is derived from silk worms (that are actually Naturally Dyed Thai Silkcaterpillars) that are cultivated in huge numbers. There are many forms of silk fabric but essentially there are 4 key types:

Mulberry Silk that is produced by silk worms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. This is the basis of most commercial silk fabric. Raw mulberry silk can be either white or golden yellow in colour.

Eri Silk is created by silkworms that are fed on castor leaves with a pale yellow colour.

Mulga Silk comes from India and is produced by worms that feed on Soalu and Sorn plant leaves – usually mid-yellow in colour.

Tasar Silk produced by worms feeding on the leaves of the Asan plant. It is less lustrous than the mulberry silk but still of high quality. Tasar silk fabric is usually dark orange/copper colour

Other Silk Fabrics

naturally dyed silk threadsFrom these 4 basic types of silk fabric, many other silks fabrics are made.

These fabrics include Dupioni (probably the highest quality and most expensive silk fabric), Charmeuse and Chiffon (still luxurious but more affordable than Dupioni).

Other major silk fabrics include Jacquard (from the famous Jacquard automated looms), and Naturally Dyed Thai Silk that is chemical free, has a little less vibrant colours but with unique patterns, totally safe and 100% eco-friendly (see image above).

There is also Noil, Organza, Satin and a whole range of blended silk fabrics.

All reputable sites will have this information easily available to you and if you cannot find this information on the website, then leave and look at another site - there are thousands to choose from at your convenience!

Thai Silk Magic provides free shipping for orders of $100 or more and we also have a 100% guarantee return of funds if you are not completely happy with our products. In addition, if you are not completely satisfied with your Thai silk fabric, you can return it to us without any restocking charges.

Sample Swatches

If you decide to use fabric stores online then you are relying on the merchants trust and web photos to make your fabric choice decision. This is difficult so request a sample swatch to be sent to you. This is usually not very expensive and most sites provide them at a small cost plus shipping.

Thai Silk Magic will provide you with a Complementary Silk Sample Set on your request. And we will also ship it to you for FREE. However, please make sure you really want the swatch as it's a costly process for our village.

We have both "Bridal Fabrics" and "Occasional/Casual Clothes Fabrics" in sets of 5 fabrics.

As our Thai silk fabric is all handmade and 100% naturally dyed they are always in limited, exclusive supply...and it's almost impossible for us to perfectly match a previously created fabric or scarf.

So even though at any time we may have more than 70 fabric styles available on our web site, it's quite possible that some of the silk samples are already out of stock. However, you will still get a good idea of the wonderful look and feel of our completely natural creations.

With our processes we cannot guarantee if particular sample swatches will be available in even 1 or 2 weeks time. In addition, as our natural dye colours vary from season to season, we cannot guarantee any colour matching in the future.

This is the reason why we ask people who buy Thai silk fabric from us to be careful with their quantity measurements (order a few extra yards if not completely sure). This is also the reason why we have our returns policy in place, in order to completely remove these hassles.

Modes of Payment

Most fabric stores online will accept all major credit cards. If you are still a little unsure about online shopping then ask us for our free publication called "Safe Online Shopping Guide."

At Thai Silk Magic we accept all credit cards via our PayPal transaction system. Using our PayPal process means you never have to disclose your credit card details to us and it also provides you will more online protection and security.
