Our Thai Village Tour
Many have asked us to provide this so here is a brief tour of our remote Thai village.
It’s also the proud home of Thai Silk Magic.
Please don’t forget to leave your thoughts and comments about this post below – we would really appreciate that.
We are located about 50km or 30 miles from both the Cambodian and Laos borders in far north-eastern Thailand.
Our village is very poor with an average “income” of less than $90/month.
Education is Vital to our Village Future
We have a pre-school in the grounds of our temple for about 12 children between the ages of 3 to 5 years. As well we have a small primary school for about 70 children and Thai Silk Magic has been proud to be able to help both these schools with equipment, TV’s, uniforms and books as well as playing a major part in the rebuilding of or village primary school (because the government knocked .down the old one for being unsafe then announced there were no funds available to rebuild!)
Children old enough to go to high school either attend school in the nearby larger village of Ban That or if the family can afford it their older children go to high schools in the nearby city of Si Sa Ket.
At Thai Silk Magic we see that education is critical to the future of our village as it is one way of enabling our children to get employment away from the rice farm and hopefully help their families break their “vicious cycle of debt.”
Houses, Rice, Onions and Silk!
To give you some idea it costs about $5 thousand dollars to build a new home in our village and this is beyond most families without any help. As you can see in the video most of the homes are very poorly constructed, often using scrap materials and most do not have any glass windows.
We specialize in rice farming, growing onions and creating naturally dyed handmade Thai silk that we export all over the world.
Our village name is Ban Dong Yang and we have about 400 people living here. The nearest city is called Si Sa Ket which is about 20km or 12 miles away.
Thai Silk Magic is our village handmade silk weaving business and by sharing all the profits we hope we can improve lifestyles and education opportunities for the children.
It has been exciting to see some families, with help from Thai Silk Magic, build or start to build new homes.
Thai Silk Magic has also helped with power and water supplies for many families and sometimes we have even helped them purchase equipment like refrigerators, satellite TV systems, washing machines and other essential household items.
Although a financially poor village we are very proud of what we do and our handmade silk fabrics and scarves have been assessed at the highest possible quality levels.
