Toxic Chemicals in Fabrics – Are You Aware of the Risks?
This video was “unlisted” on our YouTube Channel for some time to provide our readers with exclusive access to this information.
However, we have just make this important video “public” so we could share it with the entire YouTube community as well as our subscribers and blog visitors.
Most people are aware of toxic or harmful chemicals in food they buy for their families.
However, relatively few people are aware of the potential danger of toxic chemicals in their fabrics/clothing.
The increasing demand of customers for fabrics and clothes that are anti-static, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial plus with everyone in a rush the demand for iron-free fabrics with the most vibrant colours is only possible by fabric manufacturers using chemicals.
One of the major toxic chemical problems comes from the dye materials used.
Some of these chemicals are harmless like the Alum used in mordants (colour-fixatives) but many are extremely toxic like chrome and formaldehyde (used to make fabrics wrinkle free and almost ironing free). Even some commonly used fabric softeners contain harmful chemicals like Chloroform that is also on the EPA Hazardous Waste List!
If you or anyone in your family from toddlers to grand parents are in any way sensitive to chemicals then you should exercise extreme caution when shopping for fabrics and clothes.
There is an increasing amount of chemicals being used these days in order to satisfy the urgent demands of customers worldwide.
How to Avoid These Toxic Chemicals
BUT there is a simple solution – purchase Natural Fibers that have had no chemicals added anywhere in their processes.
Natural fibers like silk, wool, linen, hemp and Alpaca.
However, still be careful as even some of these natural fibers have used chemicals in their cleaning, processing and/or finishing processes.
So especially look for natural fabrics that use only natural dyes and natural mordants in their creation with no chemical finishers.
They may be a little more expensive but they will be far safer, more durable and give you wonderful peace of mind.
